Certain people could not stand being single and alone. They need to always be in a relationship. So the moment they got over the previous relationship, they start to search for the next one by a certain target date or time frame. It's basically "hunting time".

For me, I've never invested much time in looking for the right guy. In fact, I hardly make any effort! Always passive... Which is no surprise why I've remained single all this time. I mean, I'm not gorgeous, and I don't have that charming persona to attract people to me. Hence, by default, I never get noticed. I need to work extra hard and take on a more active role if I really want to find that guy of my dreams. It means being thick skin and have no fear of rejection.

So I really want to set a target here to make that extra effort. And I have that right song to dedicate to those guys out there to look my way.

Signs

Haiyu, I tell you ... spooky ... in less than 24 hours on New Year's Day, on two separate occasions, Fable and I witnessed the side mirrors of a car and a motorbike kena hit and dropped off. Is it a sign to say "be careful ... be on guard for backstabbers or unfortunate events"? Choi! It's not my side mirror la, but still!

And then hor, I went to KLCC to park car 3 times in the past 5 days, and every single time, I got the exact same parking spot. Almost as if it's reserved for me ... vacant ... just waiting for me to come and park! Not that I'm complaining or anything cos it's very near the escalator, but still!

Nah, here's my favourite Justin Timberlake song (see I'm not really stuck in the 80s tau!), also a track in BJ35. Me likey.

Ultimate Madonna

Due to be released Sept 28 worldwide is Madonna's latest greatest hits compilation, a celebration of over 26 years of Madonna's music. Not sure if we can get it here in Malaysia on that exact date, but I will surely be visiting the stores on that day!

Recently, the track listings for the CD and DVD compilations were officially announced. See side bar for information.


Celebration CD - The 'Ultimate' Collection

The double CD package will feature 36 songs, including 2 new songs, from her 27-years career. It is interesting to note that song selections were heavily skewed towards the earlier part of her career. Of the 34 old songs, 20 were selected from the first 8 years (1983 - 1990) of her career. Songs post-1991, which covers 18 years, were severely under-represented. Only 6 songs from the 1991-2000 period, while 8 songs from the 2001-2008 period made it to the collection. It is not particularly surprising as most fans (and even non-fans) identify with her earlier songs more when she was at her peak back then in the 80s.

Apart from the two new songs, the remaining 34 songs have either previously been released in her studio albums or soundtracks or greatest hits compilations. It seems that all the old songs featured in the compilations were in versions that have been previously released before. It's a shame as they could have included some remixed versions, but I guess they wanted to preserve the original "flavour" or "essence" of her songs. So for those loyal fans like me who owned all of her previous albums, there's nothing really much to look forward to.



In my opinion, all songs are big Madonna hits worthy in the 'ultimate' compilation, with the exception of Miles Away which I think do not deserve to be there given that there were many better and more deserving "trademark" hits that were absent (Deeper and Deeper, This Used to Be My Playground, I'll Remember).


Celebration - Video Collection DVD

Whatever that the CD lacks, the DVD pretty much makes up for it. This video collection DVD appears to be a lot more comprehensive with 47 of Madonna's music videos, which includes 27 previously unreleased videos!! It appears that the videos will be arranged in chronological order.
I am certainly looking forward to the saucy, sinful and previously unreleased and previously banned (from being aired on MTV) videos like Justify My Love, Erotica and What It Feels Like For A Girl. I just hope they don't get banned in Malaysia, though... fingers crossed!!!

I'm also glad they've included the videos for True Blue, Live To Tell, Who's That Girl, Deeper and Deeper, I'll Remember, I Want You and You'll See. Now I don't have to go to You Tube to watch them!

Notably absent from both the CD and DVD compilations were American Life and This Used To Be My Playground. For American Life, I think the original uncensored/unedited version of the video was one of her best work. Tried YouTubing American Life, and couldn't find the orginal video. And I certainly do not understand the rationale for excluding This Used To Be My Playground which was a #1 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, and Top 10 in charts across the world.

Both the CD and DVD packages are indeed quite THE COMPREHENSIVE and ULTIMATE collection of Madonna's best. All the videos in the DVD will certainly showcase the artistic genius and evolution of pop's cultural icon. No one does it better than Madonna.

Celebration

Gambler

I was pleasantly surprised to hear one of my favourite Madonna songs, Gambler, being played in the gym yesterday.



Gambler is a 1985 Madonna song from the movie Vision Quest. The other song from the movie was Crazy For You. Interesting info about the song:
- Released as a single in other parts of the world but not in the US;
- Peaked at #4 in the UK.
- Songwriting credited entirely to Madonna (almost all of her other songs are co-written with others)
- The only single not available in any of her albums.

To me, I like the song as it seemed to have that uptempo "country and western - horse-riding feel". It was nice to be able to workout with one of my favourite songs! Got more energy to lift weights! LOL!

The Night CGYOOMH Died...

After watching last night’s episode of AI, I feel compelled to comment on the show. They absolutely killed the song!! The AI Top 8 slaughtered Ms. Minogue’s infectious tune. Awful!! OMG! Whoever chose that song for them to sing should be booted out! And that's what the judges have been saying all the time: Song Choice!!!! A dance track is dance track, no matter how catchy it is... it is not "We are the World"... group performance on a dance track will not work, especially one which requires attitude, sexiness and diva-ness to execute. And no one else can sing that song with such attitude and sexiness apart from Minogue!!!

And what's with Kelly Pickler? She performed last year, and she performed again this year! And she was just one of Idol finalist. Not even in Top 5, I think. She was all pitchy all over her own song. Bad! Bad! Bad!

OK, so we’re down from 8 to 7. Lil should be booted out next. They’ve given her enough chances already week after week. One word: Lame. I didn’t think Anoop and Matt’s vocals were great either. And I’m not a fan of Danny. He just irritates the hell out of me.

My pick for the top three finalists? Adam, Kris and Allison. I’m not too sure about Allison yet, but lately she seems to be original enough in her performances. Kris has that cute boyish looks and has been consistently in control and doing well, except maybe for the last round. Adam has been the most versatile and original of the lot, and he was able to pull it off every time he takes the stage on the most challenging songs and performances.

People automatically assume you're "too choosy" if you happen to be single after so many years. In my case, I've never been in any relationship even though I've lived to half my expected lifespan (this is so sad). I've had crushes, flings, chicken and duck relationship .... but nothing serious... nothing intense ... none lasted long enough to be certain that it was really love.

When I shared my frustrations, friends would reply "you have too high QC", "you're too choosy", "you don't make enough effort" etc etc... apparently it was always my fault. Yes, perhaps I didn't make enough effort but I'm generally rather shy and quiet person. But to say that I am "choosy" is absolutely incorrect. I object!!!

Frankly, no one has seriously pursued me for love before. I've never been loved (yes, this is so sad ... again). And over time, I begin to wonder if there was something really wrong with me... perhaps I'm unattractive, perhaps I have bad attitude, perhaps I smell .... why no one interest in me at all? When I look around, even people with horrible behaviour are happily in relationships. Even people who are ugly have beautiful partners. One man's meat is another man's poison.... so there should be some one for me too. I don't have to be a magnet, but I don't want to be a repellent either [I'll blog about my ability to repel people (at least that's what I think) another time la].

That's why I've somewhat given up believing. Trust me, at some point, you don't have any ego or confidence left at all if you keep scoring negatives. A little reassurance will be of great help, to believe in yourself, to believe in love, to believe you have what it takes for someone else to love you.

In the past ten days or so, Bert has given me that little assurance. We've seen each other almost every other day, and in my life I have never felt anything like that since I met him. He makes me feel comfortable. I feel love. This is the right time to believe in love.

Self Control

Have you ever let yourself loose cruising in the park late a night .... at the Lost World, Jurassic Park or KJ Park? Or perhaps in dimly lit corridors of Babylon, Mirage, Otot2?

Some of you may have succumbed to the addiction, like how a friend of mine did when he cruised the parks till the early morning almost every other day... regular visits to the saunas...
(He has since settled down with his partner)

I believe this song and video, Self Control, somewhat captures that.



The song was performed by one of my favourite singers, Laura Branigan. The song was released in 1984, an instant international hit. The video was somewhat banned by MTV for being too saucy and suggestive.



It was re-recorded and remixed with techno-dance flavour by the Royal Gigolos in 2004; an edited version of it appeared in the second "block" of BodyJam 38.

At one point or another in our lives, most of us would have cruised the parks or the saunas.... even if it's just once, to see what's out there. Did you?

WOW Kylie WOW

I loved Kylie. Her songs always make me feel good, and most of them have that dancey tune that lift your spirits up.

My heart was racing wth excitement as we made our way up the staircase from the restaurant at the stadium. As we made our way to the East entrance, I caught sight of a smart-looking V, formerly our BodyJam instructor, who had move to SG to work a year ago. We chatted a bit, and then it was time to pass the security checkpoint. Damn! I should have brought my camera, apparently, they longer make a fuss of it. Luckily, DH brought his, and he managed to capture a few good shots of the stage.

As we walked into our seating 'block', I turned to my left to look out for Mrs Philippe, who was seated two blocks away, waving at us. I went over to meet her and her friends, and camwhored a bit. Don't know if she's gonna blog about her experience at the concert at her food-cum-movie-cum-music blog.

As we sat and waited for Kylie, we scanned the audience for Sgboy (check out his sexy blog) and his four friends, all in their "skanky" K.Y.L.I.E white tanktops. Cannot find! Then DH, in his oversized stylish spectacles, detected hawtness three blocks to our left. Initially shy (as usual), it took a while before we went up to say "hi".

It's funny that Mrs P, Sgboy, their friends and us were all seated on the same side of the stadium.

The stadium was filling up real quick, and almost every seat was now taken. The audience around we where we were seated (ie. the cheapest tickets at S$100) were mostly ang moh's. Probably expats and their family. If I were them and had the money, I would have paid the S$500 tickets right at the front!

Then the lights dimmed, and the audience cheered as the screen began to light up.

Kylie made a rather grand entrance with Speakerphone. The intro-buildup to her entrance was spectacular ... the graphics/video, the music ... awesome... OMG! I almost fainted ... I have never seen anything like this before!

Overall, the visuals were stunning, the music and arrangement were flawless and her voice was impressive. I think she has been unfairly underrated as a singer ... I mean, she sang live, her voice strong, clear, melodious and feminine, and she managed to reach the high notes quite effortlessly! I am so proud of her!!!

Kylie is also a great performer. She's definitely got the X factor, and she could pull through all those stylish moves and poses seamlessly and effortlessly. And she's very very, very, very pretty indeed. She sang her heart out, and you can see her many expressions captures on the big screen.

MacArthur Park

About ten days ago, Fable, Evie and I decided to go for an all-English Karaoke session. Evie commented that it was one of the very rare occasions where no Chinese songs were sung in a karaoke session. Fable recommended the Curve outlet, as apparently they have one of the better English collection there.

So there we go, we spent 3 uninterrupted hours singing (or rather, making noises) our hearts out!! Very fulfilling! Fable chose to sing a good mix of songs from the 80s to current. Evie, was rather silent... apparently too shy even with just us! As for me, I chose all those songs from the 80s and 90s. I was ready to sing Debbie Gibson and Belinda Carlisle, but damn, not a single song in the catalogue. ~ Phuh! There seemed to be a lot of songs from the late 80s and early 90s missing! Fable reckoned it's because these songs are neither too old nor too new. But I would really like to demand an explanation from the karaoke operators!!!!

So in the end, I settled for a few interesting 70s and 80s songs, that I was sure these were rarely sung.... like Let's Hear It for the Boy (Deniece Williams), You Keep Me Hanging On (Kim Wilde), Physical (Olivia Newton-John). Two of my favourites: Buenos Aires (Madonna) and MacArthur Park (Donna Summer). And I absolutely love to sing MacArthur Park, cos it's an interesting song. It is in fact a very dramatic sad song disguised in a disco dance tune. I'll let you listen in Youtube a little later.

Apparently, the song, which was penned by Jimmy Webb and originally recorded by Richard Harris in 1968, had an unusually complex musical structure for a pop song. Read about it here. Donna Summer covered the song in 1978 and the song spent three weeks atop the Billboard charts.

Indeed, the wave of pain was also excruciatingly felt through all of us. We didn't know what else we could do to relieve the burden of her sorrow. We love her dearly and hope she would bounce back soon and kick ass.

Time and space will heal all wounds. But will she ever able to see us through that silent shade of gray which had apparently enveloped us all in that gloom of her painful memories. Or will that silent shade of gray mark the end of the sisterhood era?

OMG!!!! I can't believe it! I'm going to see Kylie!!! OMG!! OMG!! I'm not going to start blogging about her, cos I won't know how to stop! I just LOVE her!

Yeah, unfortunately, due to budget constraints, we'd have to settle for the cheapest tickets. But it's ok, cos the indoor stadium isn;t exactly too big. We've watched Xtina last year, and sat about the same distance.... not too bad la. Tempted to get the S$550 tix right at the front for a clear view... but that's > RM1.3K !!! And we haven't included our accommodation costs and transportation costs yet!

Yes yes! Just like in Xtina's concert, will be having a fun time with Fable and Evie! Also DH and his fren will be joining us this time. Yeah! And surely, there'll be more sinful activities in Singapore? *wink*

For example, despite topping the charts in 45 countries, Hung Up considered as the most successful single of all time worldwide, only manages to secure #7 in the Hot 100 chart.

Mamma Mia!

Yes! People who knew me well will know that I only watch drama movies.... I drama ma... so sure like drama movies one la.... especially those with tragic endings. But I also like musicals too. That's because it makes the movie seem like a looooonnngggg MTV. I like music videos!

My last musical movie was Hairspray. Yeah, it's been more than a year liao. This time with Mamma Mia!, it's on a preview ticket! Wah free! No need to pay! Thanks to A World Without Strangers, muahhaha! Of course, I'm the "jakun"... since this is my first time I ever got to go for preview screening. Wah! So excited lor. We had makan, then loitered around the mall, but soon AWWS signalled that it was time to go and line up....

Yes, free tickets don't come easy. There was already a long queue liao, and it was still half and hour before the show! There was a couple of other preview screenings... can't remember liao! I Then the crowd build up... wah, so many people, and in the end there's almost no more queue! Cis! I don't understand why those people don't want to open the bloody gate lor. According to AWWS, usually they let people through... no queue like this.

So we waited and waited.... and when they decided to let people through, I almost fainted (drama... drama). I was so scared people would just rush and push, but luckily it wasn't so bad. But of course there were queue jumping a bit here and there. In the end, nobody checked our preview tickets at all because the crowd was simply to big. Aiks! Anyone of you without tickets could also have snuck in for free!!! So being kiasu, I rushed along the corridor so that we will get the best seats. So unglam lor. AWWS almost vomitted his gassy drink and dinner.... keke... sorry!

So how was the movie?? It's funny and entertaining all the way through! Of course, you can't take the storyline seriously, but Abba's music works marvellously well. And aside Meryl Streep, we've got two very funny aunties in the show who's so hilarious! One of them reminded me of a friend's mom!

At the end of the show, when the credits start to roll, everybody still remained in their seats. First time nobody stood up to leave like most other shows. We were presented with two "music videos" of the three female casts singing Abba's songs.

Yes, it was lovely! I like! I get goosebumps every time an Abba song came up... reminds me of music in my childhood years.

Blond Ambition

Today is Madonna's birthday. Her 50th! And also, this year marks her 25th year as a performing artiste.

When I was little, I hardly listened to music, and it was my chi muis in school who introduced Madonna's music to me in 1990. At that time, Justify My Love was just released, and I remembered all three of us gay boys were actually singing the song out loud (not too loud la, but loud enough for the boys sitting in the next 3 chairs away to hear it) while waiting for our teacher to come into the class. Over betul! Tak tau malu singing such a controversial song in class!

At that time, I was beginning to love her music, her creative and sometimes controversial videos, her antics, her strength... yes, she's our idol and source of inspiration. There's always something different, provocative and creative everytime she dishes out new music or videos. And of course, she simply won me over in her legendary Blond Ambition tour, which I got to watch on a taped laser disc version her Japan set.

I guess while MJ is probably seen as the most talented musician and performer in history, there's no doubt, who's the smarter one and the one in control of her destiny. Despite her "trashy/sex" image she once portrayed, Madonna is still the one to set the best example among the music artistes. In her entire career, she's never done drugs (remember Whitney and just about everybody else), no emotional breakdown (remember Mariah?), no weird behaviours (Britney, Amy Winehouse, Jacko), no traffic offences like drink driving ... and she;'s laughing away to the bank. Now who says Madonna is a bad influence???

OK OK... I've just worked 13 hours straight from 8 am this morning! The next few days gonna be like this too, and by Monday, I'll be flying to some god-forsaken place in Jawa and remain miserable there for the next 2 weeks! Please help me!!!!

I heard this song "Once in a Lifetime" by Gregorian, a German band, on radio today. The song was released in 1991. It is exactly the same song covered by Shirley Kwan back then. Listening to the tune once again essentially transported me back to that time when I was in college....

WHich versions do you prefer?? I still prefer 戀一世的愛. Maybe it's because I heard it first. And I thought her voice is better for the song.

No Plastic Bag Please

Exactly 1 week ago, I attended an environmental-themed concert in Eastin Hotel - The No Plastic Bag Concert - with Danielle, Kimmy and Martha.

There were a Tun and a Datuk and their wives as guests of honour....

That rich old bum got three times lucky as he won three lucky draw prizes!! He even picked his own prize! WTF! Unfair!!! So unfair! The ACA should investigate this!! We also purchased the tickets, and we didn't even win one prize!

Gosh! I did a random search for my beloved Sandy Lam, and came across this music video. Didn't know she sang this song with Leslie Cheung! And in English! But I thought the original Cantonese version of this song sounds much better. But nonetheless, maybe I can sing this English version in karaoke! Hehe!



And there's this song I haven't heard for so long! (mainly because I don't know the title of the song, and I can't read chinese). And is that Dick Lee in the video?? Can anyone confirm this? Quite leng chai also lei. hehe!



Now I'm motivated to memorize the Canto and mandarin songs for karaoke liao!
